We, my fine Hoosiers, are one week away from the greatest spectacle in all Hoosierdom.
The Indiana State Fair 2010-the year of the pig.
Heaven bless the pig and the resulting sausage, bacon and Easter ham.
I was going to write about the Midway, and how this year is THE YEAR we will be getting unlimited ride wristbands one day and twirl ourselves into oblivion. But then I went on the fair website (for the 27th time this week) and realized there’s far too much going on at the fair and one may need a well planned out calendar and a week off of work to accomplish all there is to do.
Throughout the course of the fair there will be cheerleaders, baton twirling, horse pulls, motorcycle day, fiddler competition, hot air balloon day and something called “boots & bling.” And that’s not even all of the events not to mention it doesn’t take into account the concerts! The free ones and the grandstand ones!
*phew!*
I know as a kid we always hit the fair in a perfectly laid out path, horses, home arts (my mom was a photographer and my dad a woodworker…) pigs, sheep, cows, vegetables, flowers, caramel apple, home. We never did the midway rides and we never stayed for the shows or exhibitions. (One time we did catch that guy who chainsaws art out of giant logs…) But I say that all those free events at the fair are worth planning your day around…they’re fun to watch and they give your kids some new talent to aspire to (chainsaw art!)
The fair begins August 6th and runs through August 22nd. I’ll see you there.
