I’ve been to the most random places in Indiana, but one place in particular my mother would enjoy going to was this little historic farm near Michigan City, Ind. On Sunday afternoons, we’d sit out on a park bench, eat a picnic lunch and walk around the farm, historic home and wooded area accompanying the property.
It’s nostalgic to me now, but I hated it then, probably because while visiting the farm, I was stung by a bee literally on the very top of my head.
I digress. A recent visit to the 100 Acres: Virginia B. Fairbanks Art and Nature Park reminded me of my childhood visits to the northwest Indiana nature reserve…only the 100 Acres exhibit is way better.
When I visited 100 Acres, it wasn’t under the best circumstances, but I was able, no less, to develop an immediate love for the park.
My purpose for the visit: a corporate reception
My attire: a skirt with heels
The weather: 90 degrees
The terrain: not flat and not conducive to stilettos.
I ditched my heels for flatter footwear and morphed into curiosity mode. 100 Acres adjacent to the Indianapolis Museum of Art (IMA) is incredibly beautiful and kind of surreal. Plus the area is deciduous, but you don’t feel like you’re a subject of the Blair Witch Project.
Winding pathways. Perfectly imperfect foliage. Breaks along your walk to just sit down to rest or be at peace. Unexpected art sculptures. Butterflies floating past you. Bubbling brooks and ponds.
Sounds like something you’d read in a book or see in an movie adaptation of a Jane Austen novel, right? This is very real, my friends. The very next chance I get, I plan to put on my sneakers, grab a friend and explore the entire grounds.
This is something I cannot wait until next spring to see. *ah-ha moment* OH!!!! I wonder if it will be open during the winter? Snow covered lawns, ice dangling from the tips of tree branches…I’m so there!
