A couple of months ago I wrote about some tasty places around Indy where one who’s tummy is disturbed by the presence of gluten could dine in digestive peace. Well, I’m pleased to report that there’s been some developments and changes (there’s also been a few gluttonous nights out) and I’m here to let you in on some of my findings.
First of all, just as he promised in his comment on my previous post, Scotty’s Brewhouse has an entire page dedicated to gluten free fare in the new magazine style menu (which isn’t quite as overwhelming as the 10 commandments style menu you were handed a few months back.) Long time gluten free diners have rejoiced in the new menu, however for any of you new to the cheeseburger without a bun lifestyle, you will weep inside as you pass by the Shewman special and land on a page full of salads, vegetables and grilled meats. (My suggestion? Get the burger without the bun, pile all the stuff you like on top and leave a happy camper, same goes for The Elbow Room, their cheeseburgers are just as tasty without the bun.) It’s certainly a start and I’m a huge fan of Scott Wise for dedicating an entire page to gluten free eating and training his staff appropriately as well.
One night over the summer I was able to sit out on the patio at Adobo Grill and partake in their guacamole (man I feel sorry for whoever has to wash those bowls) and their delightfully extensive gluten free menu. It is separate from the regular menu but it is a full page of mexican culinary delights. Two thumbs up from me. I didn’t feel as though I was sacrificing a thing. (Also, if you can dine on the tiny patio, go for it, it’s hard to go into their dimly lit atmosphere when the weather outside is sunny and delicious. However if you’re looking for romance with a side of queso? Found.)
Third is Yats, it holds this special little place in my heart. The decor, the smells, the chalkboard menu, not to mention Joe. With Yats being local you can bet that if you ask a question, it’s going to be answered by a real person…for example…
My request was not only answered (Red Beans and Rice FTW,) but was left with an open invitation to speak with the man himself. I’ve found so many local businesses here that are completely invested in the community and for this reason I would have a REALLY hard time leaving.
I love this city. For reals.
Now if Shapiro’s could just figure out how to make me some gluten free rye bread for my heaping pile of pastrami…
