Adobo Grill is Muy Delicioso!

Growing up in Northwest Indiana has given me a special affinity for Mexican food. The large Mexican population that has settled there brought with them some of the best food you could ever imagine.

Since my own migration to Indianapolis I have yet to find a restaurant that rivals my childhood favorites, however I do have a couple of spots to satisfy my fix.

A good burrito is in order every now and then, but when I want something a little more authentic, I go to Adobo Grill. Last year for Cinco de Mayo, my girlfriends and I went there and had a blast! It was packed, but that still didn’t stop the merriment or the margaritas.

Since that fiesta with friends, I began receiving emails about special dinners that are held monthly. I finally took advantage of the January dinner. Part of my curiosity stemmed from the event title “Oaxaca/Tequila Dinner” and the other part just wanted to see what it was all about.

Drink Specials: (l to r) Tamarindo; AsomBroso Margarita; El Platino; Homemade Sangrita; La Rosa; and Anejo

My guest and I were escorted to a small, private room away from normal customers. We were seated at a table with two other couples and greeted with four types of 100% blue agave tequilas provided by AsomBroso .

We had no clue what the drinks were or when we were to drink them, but throughout the evening, the “go with the flow” tone helped us relax and we were able to sip the special tequilas at our leisure.

As soon as we sat down, a waiter rushed over and promptly poured us a margarita. No complaints there! The margarita was paired with our first course, the Molotes de Papa con Chorizo, a corn masa pastry stuffed with potato, homemade chorizo and served with morita salsa.

The first course was followed up with two more courses: the Tamales en Amarillo, a tamal stuffed with smoked shredded chicken; and the Mar y Tierra Molado, adobo marinated grilled flat iron steak with mole negro, grilled shrimp and garlicky white rice.

This Mexican version of Surf and Turf was muy delicioso!

For dessert, we had Bunuelos Ahogados, which are hot, crispy Mexican fritters drowned in piloncillo syrup (Mexican donuts). Each course was better than the last, but I have to say the dessert was absolutely delicious.

The food was spectacular, but what was even more impressive was that each course was served with a special drink…that’s in addition to the four AsomBroso tequila shots that we sipped during the experience.

For February, Adobo Grill is offering an “Aphrodisiac Valentine’s Day Cooking Class” so you better inquire about it fast before spaces fill up.
