If you’ve never been to the Herron School of Art and Design you are truly missing out on one of the major influences of art in Indianapolis. They are developing and incubating the future artists of Indy as well as showcasing world-renowned artists. Their current exhibit, Curious and Curiouser takes a look at the works of Casey Millard, Wayne White and Sarah Emerson.
What makes this show so exciting is the atmosphere that is created by the nature of the art and the use of color. All three artists have very distinctive styles and great color palettes.
In the northeast corner of the gallery is an impressive mural (picture shown) by Sarah Emerson, that has great color and elements that come off the wall to give a sense of depth. Some of her other works are more graphic in nature, but have a children’s book feel to them take over your feelings of what is being depicted. Emerson will be speaking at the Basile Auditorium, Wednesday, February 23, at 5:30 pm.
Another artist, Casey Riordan Millard has developed a character, Shark Girl, that is incorporated into her illustrations. Millard has also used her girl with a shark head in sculptures and life-size installations. I always enjoy when artists have found something that they are passionate about and see how far they can go with it. You can see Millard speaking Thursday, February 10, in the Basile Auditorium.
The third artist, Wayne White, has used text to overlay his beautiful landscapes. With each piece, it’s fun to see how the chosen text is relevant to the scene he has created. However, the most important thing about Mr. White; he was the set designer for Pee-Wee’s Playhouse!
How cool is that?!
You can see all three artists and their work now through February 24th and it is free to the public. Don’t just think of Herron as an art school, instead, think of it as an inspiring place to visit. Aside from having several beautiful galleries, the hallways are filled with purchased works and an amazing selection of student creations.
