Make a Day of it at The Indiana State Museum

I love having those days where nothing is planned, there is no time constraint and we can just have fun.  Recently we spent the day at the Indiana State Museum.

Being the art fanatic, I insisted that we start with the featured exhibit,  Art for the Nation. I was fascinated by this event because I remember studying about how war art was used in as much propaganda as it was patriotism.  This exhibit focuses on the art itself and yet it explains how politics and art intersected in this movement.  It is very cool to see all the vintage works and the message represented.

Another exhibit that is fun for everyone is Odd Indiana. It features objects selected from the museum’s own collections that are oddities, rarities or commonplace things with intriguing stories. There are over 50 unusual items that represent science and culture, with collections both new and old.

After walking around and seeing several other exhibits like the Frugal & Fancy: Indiana Quilts and In Her Honor, we had to stop by the gift shop.  They have everything from books, to prints and even great jewelry- we found some great souvenirs and for the most part everything was reasonably priced.

Finally, we were ready to relax, but not go home yet, so we decided to hit up the IMAX. If you have never been to an IMAX, it is pretty sweet.  They do play some mainstream movies at this location, but I always like to see their science movies such as the ones they are showing now, Hubble 3d and Sea Rex 3D: Journey to a Prehistoric World.

The Indiana State Museum makes for a great day where you can go to one place, spend the entire day and have a blast. If you know of any other places where you can spend the day and do a variety of activities, I’d love to hear about it!
