Whether you are from the town of Puebla or just want a reason to get out and enjoy a beautful Spring evening and some Mexican libations, here are a few ways you can celebrate the Mexican army’s unlikely victory over the French a few centuries back.
Live Music at Flatwater
Although it’s not a Mexican restaurant, Flatwater in Broad Ripple has one of the best and largest outdoor patios in the village. While overlooking the canal from the patio, you can sip on freezing $3 Coronas, margaritas, eat fish tacos and hear some fantastic live music from a talented local musician, Ryan Puckett. Whatever you do, don’t suggest Stairway to Heaven.
La Hacienda
With locations all over Indianapolis, La Hacienda has been cooking up some of the tastiest Mexican specialties for years. Head over to their north side location off of Binford Blvd. and enjoy discounted margaritas and enchiladas, as well as $2.50 Mexican beers.
Cinco de Mayo Celebration at Adobo Grill
Reserve your seat now for the Adobo Grill Cinco de Mayo Celebration in downtown Indianapolis. Enjoy the drink specials including tequila, house margaritas and Dos Equis on draft, and then get ready for some amazing tunes with Latin DJ Smiley.
La Piedad
Another local favorite, La Piedad makes for a great Cinco de Mayo stop in Broad Ripple. Their Cinco de Mayo Special: two Mexican beers and a double order of fajitas for $20.99. If neither of those are your style, try a wine-a-rita. You’ll thank me later.
Chumley’s
It’s an American beer house, but after one look at their Cinco de Mayo Specials, you would swear Chumley’s is from south of the border. Grab a seat overlooking Broad Ripple Avenue, people watch, and grab a few of these insane specials if you’re feeling wild and crazy: $3.75 Dos Equis pints, $15 mexican beer buckets, $5 tequilla shots (including 1800, Cabo Wabo & Patron) and $6.75 pints of their beergarita (margarita + Dos Equis).
Taqueria Cinco Amigos For Late Night Dinner
Right when you are done celebrating and about to head home, do what they do down south and grab some delicious Mexican street food. If you are near the east side and feeling adventurous, you need to make a late night stop at the most authentic Mexican food truck in town: Taqueria 5 Amigos. For very little money, you can get the tastiest cabeza (head) tacos, lengua (tongue) tortas and horchata. Enjoy this hidden gem!
While we might be a long way from Puebla, we can still have an awesome Cinco de Mayo in Indianapolis. Be safe, have fun and stay thirsty my friends!
Specials are subject to change, but as of the publishing of this post, this is what is planned for each establishment.
