Couples Art Classes at the Indianapolis Art Center

The famous Russian painter, Wassily Kandinsky, believed that art could “cause vibrations within the soul”.

And here I was just hoping it would make for a fun date night.

Just prior to Valentine’s Day, the Indianapolis Art Center offered me and my Beau the opportunity to join them for a couple’s art class. While I’ve always been artistic, I hesitated that Beau might not (initially) be thrilled at the idea of spending Friday night painting in a room full of strangers. Sometimes we have very different ideas of what ‘fun’ is.

So I kept the details of our “secret date night” mum until we got there.

Our class of 16 or so couples (some romantic partners, others friends, and a mother/daughter duo) was told that we would be using Kandinsky’s work as inspiration. I could feel Beau eyeing me skeptically.

Each on our own canvas, we were to follow along with the instructor using different painting methods to create two canvases that would compliment each other when hung together. More skeptical looks from my left.

However, as we progressed with our paintings, the looks became more encouraging and our art began to take form. Beau was even showing signs of ::gasp:: enjoying himself!

A few glasses of wine and a few cups of dirty paint water later, we had our masterpiece. As the instructor came around to our table, she paused, contemplating our work.

“Very nice,” she pondered. “So different, yet they compliment each other quite well.”

“We do,” I thought.

Quite well, indeed.
