Memorial Day Weekend Family Fun in Indianapolis

Vrrrooom Vrrrrooom it’s time for some family fun in Indianapolis.  Whether or not you’ll be going to the greatest racing spectacle on the earth this weekend – the Indianapolis 500 – there’s no doubt Indianapolis knows how to rock it on Memorial Day Weekend.

Today, I’m blogging some of my favorite family fun events going on in and around Indianapolis this week and holiday weekend.

  • American Family Insurance 500 Festival Community Day May 23rd {TODAY} 9 AM -6 PM.  While it’s not free, this family fun activity is worth its weight in gold.  Take your car around the track, meet REAL race car drivers, bounce it up in the Kids Zone, enjoy live music, and have a blast at the track together as a family.  Cost is $8-$10 depending on your age {or FREE if you’re under 6}.
  • Speed and Motion: Racing to the Finish Line {5/23-9/30}: Have artists in your tribe?  Check out the newest exhibit at the National Art Museum of Sport {University Place IUPUI} which opened yesterday.  This spectacular display features over 30 paintings, sculptures, photographs & installations all intertwined with speed and sport.  It’s absolutely FREE and open daily through September.  Check out details here.
  • Indianapolis Motor Speedway Kids Club:  While this isn’t an event, I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention this great opportunity for your little racers.  For $25 they get a heap of racing swag PLUS FREE admission {with the purchase of adult admission} to all Indianapolis 500 practice and qualification days, FREE race day admission {with the purchase of general adult admission} to the Indianapolis 500, Brickyard 400 and Red Bull Indianapolis GP, a birthday card, a holiday card, One-time 10% discount on Indianapolis Motor Speedway merchandise, and more!  Plus there are a host of events throughout the year {Easter Egg Hunt, Halloween Party, and more} where your little Helio or Danica can party it up.
  • The 500 Festival Memorial Day Service helps us remember the true reason we celebrate.  It has nothing to do with racing at all {or a day off from work or even yummy BBQs}, but everything to do with the men and women who have so faithfully given their lives in the name of freedom.  Held on May 25th on Monument Circle at Noon, this event features military regalia, special speakers, and more.  It’s a great way to teach your kids the true meaning of the holiday.
