I would be hard pressed to find a summer evening where I wouldn’t enjoy lounging on a blanket and picnic-ing to a larger-than-life soundtrack. Saturday, June 16 is the first performance by the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra in the Marsh Symphony on the Prairie series and I am ready to kick it off!
There will be 15 different performances to catch from this Saturday up until the beginning of September. Kicking off with a classic like Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue,” this year’s schedule will bring some anticipated favorites of mine like “The Music of Queen,” “Disco at the Symphony – A Tribute to The Bee Gees,” “The Contours – 50 Years of Motown” and “Classical Mystery Tour – A Tribute to The Beatles.”
All shows start at 8pm but you will want to arrive early to find a clear spot and stake your claim. Bring comfortable chairs, some blankets for chilly nights and don’t forget the best part – the food! Some people bring mini crock pots of dips, meatballs and casseroles to dine on while others take it simple with sandwiches and snack foods.
I suggest packing it with cans of Sun King Osiris and snacks picked up at your local farmers market.
Tickets for adults are $22 in advance or $27 at the entrance and you can view the full listing of performances on their website. Book yourself a ticket for the 1859 Ballon Voyage so you can fly over the symphony before or during the show!
