Veterans Day in Indianapolis = FREE Fun

Did you know that Indianapolis has more war memorials and monuments than any other city except Washington D.C.?  Let’s just say that we’re a city that doesn’t take sacrifice lightly.  We’re thankful for our freedom and aren’t afraid to show it.  And the city of Indianapolis will honor veterans in all sorts of ways this weekend.  Here are some of the best experiences to honor to celebrate those who have and are serving our nation.

  • The Indiana Historical Society will offer FREE admission to veterans and their families on Saturday, Nov. 10.  Plus, veterans will receive free doughnuts, too.
  • Nothing speaks more of the time honored traditions of our branches of military service than a parade.  Check out more than 80 units of marching regalia and memory at the Veterans Day Memorial Service and Parade.  A memorial service will be held at 11 am on Saturday, Nov. 10 on the steps of the Indiana War Memorial.  The parade will follow.  Details about the route can be found here.
  • The Indianapolis Zoo regularly discounts both active and retired service men and women {and their families}.  On both Memorial and Veterans Day, they also get free admission.  Family members still receive the 20% off discount.  All of the details can be found here.
  • The Indiana State Museum hosts Heroes from the Heartland, a photo display, historical re-enactors, and a live music experience that’s not to miss.  Veterans and those with current military I.D. receive FREE admission to the museum from Thursday, Nov. 1 to Sunday, Nov. 11, plus their families receive the group discount.  More details can be found here.
  • On Sunday, Nov. 11 at 3 pm, the Indianapolis Municipal Band will host a Veteran’s Day Concert also at the Indiana State Museum.  Admission is free and the special guest conductor of the afternoon will be Commander Allen E. Beck, retired leader of the U.S. Navy Band.
  • Finally, the best round up post of a number of restaurants nationwide are offering free food to Veterans.  You can find plenty of Indianapolis restaurants on The Military Wallet’s list.

Do you know of other events to honor veterans going on in the Circle City this weekend?  Leave them in the comments!
