Five Favorite Free & Festive Indianapolis Events

Indianapolis is an affordable city where you can do a lot without spending a lot.  Here are my picks for this week to keep the holidays bright and cheery, not dismal and depleted.

1) Yelp’s Totally Bazaar: Do your last minute holiday shopping while you enjoy complementary food and beverages.  Head to the Indianapolis City Market on Thursday, December 13 from 6-10 pm.  This event {due to the free adult beverages} is open only to those 21 and older so leave the kiddos at home and enjoy some big people time.  For a list of participating vendors and more details, go here.

2) There’s nothing quite like Christmas on the Farm.  Trader’s Point Creamery offers a holiday extravaganza like no other complete with sleigh rides, Elk, caroling, jolly ‘ole St. Nicholas, and crafts for the kids.  Plus you’ll have the opportunity to do a bit of shopping and be sure to budget a few dollars to indulge in some farm fresh hot chocolate or eggnog!  December 15 from 9 am – 2 pm, don’t miss the mooo-ving experience.

3) Enjoy a holiday gift of FREE Admission to the Indiana Historical Society’s Indiana Experience.  Unwrap your present on December 15 all day long and enjoy this top notch interactive museum filled with Hoosier history, 10 am – 5 pm.  I’m excited to see the new “You Are There 1939: Healing Bodies, Changing Minds” experience.  Did you know that the field of electrocardiography was pioneered right here in Indianapolis by African American Dr. Harvey Middelton?

4) Christmas at Lily House welcomes you to explore Christmas in the 1930s and 1940s.  Located on the grounds of the beautiful {and always free} Indianapolis Museum of Art, tours of this grand home are available throughout the year on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays at 2 pm.  The halls are bedecked during the holidays and on open display through January 6, 2013.  For more details, go here.

5) Head downtown to watch the Santa Hustle as 100s of bearded 5K & Half Marathon runners spreading Christmas cheer in their Santa hats.  Even if you’re not running, it’s quite a sight to see.  The race will be run Sunday, December 16 at 9 am.  Check out the details here.
