When I say Sister Act, you may think of the hilarious 1992 movie starring Whoopi Goldberg as a wise-cracking lounge singer who injects some serious soul into a convent of nuns. Forced into hiding with The Holy Order of the Little Sisters of Our Mother of Perpetual Faith (say that three times fast), she transforms their choir from a hot mess into a gospel-infused sensation. The movie’s rollicking soundtrack made it a natural fit to transform into a fabulous, flashy Broadway musical.
Sister Act will be in Indianapolis at the Old National Centre February 26-March 3 as part of Broadway Across America. The show won five Tony Awards, including Best Score (written by Glen Slater and Alan Menken, who you may remember from The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast), Best Book and Best Musical.
The stage production captures the sassiness and energy of the movie. The music covers a wide range of genres, including soul, Motown, funk and of course, disco anthems. There’s plenty of hand-clapping and dancing, including from the pope himself. And don’t forget about comedy—plenty of nun-related hijinks ensue.
