Sun King Brewing is known not only for their delicious house beers but their signature styles that are created for specific events and organizations. The Indianapolis-based brewery partnered with Gen Con to provide an exclusive beer that can only be consumed during the four-day event and Visit Indy has the details on what it is, how to get it and why you should let your taste buds try it.
Gen Con and Sun King Brewing left it up to the public to submit ideas for what the name of the beer should be. Over 1,600 names were submitted with over 1,300 votes and the one selected to represent the 2013 beer was Flagon Slayer.
The beer is a braggot style which originated way back in the 12th and 13th centuries around Ireland. Dave Colt, brewer at Sun King Brewing, said “I chose the style of beer because it calls back to beer from a bygone era.” Many games are set in medieval times and Sun King Brewing’s nod to that era with this beer just shows their commitment to producing something that would fit with the event and its attendees.
Honey is a common ingredient in braggot style beers, and a kiss of local Indiana honey was used as a sweetener. The beer sits at 6 percent ABV (alcohol by volume) and 12 IBU’s (international bitter units). When you try the beer, take a look at its color – I was told there might be something added to influence it’s look!
