This post was guest authored by Katy Mann. Katy can be found out and about in Central Indiana pushing a giant stroller full of three children, three years old and under. Born and raised in Southern California, her quest to learn about all things Indiana took her to wineries, farms and finally brought about her website, Indy with Kids.
The end of my summer is not marked by back to school since I don’t have school aged children living in my home. Instead, my summer continues until the air conditioning is shut off because of outdoor temperatures or until the leaves on the trees change to fiery colors of gold and red and orange.
Indianapolis has a wide variety of places offering frozen treats throughout the year but right now is my favorite time to visit — I’m still able to meet up with friends on the patio and watch people stroll by and the temperatures outside are still digits that leave me wanting for a cool, refreshing snack. With all of those extra days of summer remaining, I’m using them wisely and you should too, with or without children.
BRICS (Broad Ripple Ice Cream Station): With more flavors of hand dipped ice cream than there are days in the month, this hangout located in the historic Monon Railway Station is popular, especially among those using the Monon Trail. Open year round, BRICS has deck seating with a scenic view of the trail, a walk up window, water bottle filling station, a fireplace to warm up in front of when it’s cool out and wifi. I always get Monon Tracks – vanilla ice cream full of mini peanut butter cups and fudge swirls.
Shaved Ice Corner Stand: At the corner of Winthrop and Westfield a small summertime escape is within reach of the busy street. The Shaved Ice stand opens up as the weather heats up and closes as it cools down. Reminiscent of the snackbar snow cones on my childhood softball field, I love stopping by the walk up window while shopping with friends or riding bikes with my family. A tropical blend of Coconut and Mango are my favorite flavors.
Cultured Swirl: Using all organic ingredients, Cultured Swirl offers a delicious frozen yogurt for those visiting the Fountain Square area. The patio is the perfect backyard atmosphere and on occasion you might even happen upon a patio party in progress with live music! The two hanging swing seats in the front of the shop add to the playful atmosphere. Go for the Blueberry yogurt with warm Nutella sauce.
Nicey Treat: Look for the bicycle carts selling handcrafted popsicles made of all natural ingredients. Nicey Treat carts serve up yummy desserts made locally from fresh seasonal produce, but you’ll have to find them first! These special popsicles are found at many local events such as farmers markets, festivals and food truck gatherings. You’ll have to check their social media pages to keep up! Why not have the Strawberry Lemonade popsicle or the spicy Dark Chocolate Chili?
Indulge Cafe: Fashioned with an old timey soda fountain counter, Indulge ice cream is hand scooped. With a huge choice of places to sit from the sidewalk tables looking out on the Fortville Main Street, to the comfy couches, to the stools at the counter, there’s a seat for every type, just as there’s a flavor for every palate. Scoop up the Rocky Road but please, DO NOT LEAVE WITHOUT TRYING THE MARSHMALLOW COKE DRINK!
