Looking for more recommendations to celebrate that special day?

I know my mom would love to start the day off with a pedicure at Evan Todd Spa & Salon, eat at Taste for a wonderful brunch and spend the rest of the day walking around the Indianapolis Museum of Art or the Indianapolis Art Center.  Then, my ice-cream loving family, would end the day sitting on the patio at Brics.

Happy Mother’s Day!

Art on the Monon Trail

With this beautiful weather we’ve been having you can be sure that the Monon Trail is full with bikes, roller blades, skateboards, runners and dogs all enjoying the gorgeous views of the season.

The other day I saw someone ride a bike and play a guitar while singing a song – all at the same time!

There are 10.4 miles of the Monon Trail to discover, running from 96th Street to 10th.  The north end connects to the Monon Greenway in Carmel and the south end becomes the start of the Cultural Trail.

Recently I’ve started biking on the south end from 54th Street to 10th, which has led me to discover some beautiful and unique murals and landmarks.

Each photo in this gallery shares a piece of Indianapolis culture that you can explore on the Monon. If you’re visiting Indianapolis or don’t have a bike of your own you can rent some wheels from Bicycle Garage Indy at their North, South and Downtown locations, Wheel Fun Rentals at White River State Park or DG Bicycles off the Monon at 86th.

Wednesday Wine Tastings

Jan, Tastings' certified sommelier welcomes the group to Wednesday's Wine Tasting.

I’ll shamelessly admit that I’ve spent several evenings enjoying wines by the taste, glass or bottle at Tastings, a downtown Indianapolis wine bar. At one of the busiest corners in downtown Indianapolis and with incredible outdoor seating under the Artsgarden, Tastings is no-brainer for a relaxing night out.

At the base of the concept, Tastings has Enomatic tasting stations that allow you to insert a pre-paid card to get a 2 oz., 4 oz. or 6 oz. pour from over 100 wine selections.

But the best part about my favorite wine spot…Wednesday Wine Tastings!

This past Wednesday, I decided to finally buckle-in and be one of the 17 who sit along the popular horseshoe wine bar to partake. The Cinco de Mayo tasting was filled with wines from “Barrel 27” out of Paso Robles, CA and they brought in someone directly from the vineyard.

Wine tastings can always be somewhat intimidating. Do you swirl, sniff or spit?!

Fortunately for me, anything goes. From the novice wine drinker to the connoisseur, the crowd seems to be an eclectic group.

With Tastings being attached to the luxury Conrad hotel, these weekly events often collect a mix of out of town visitors and the regular locals. My girlfriend and I enjoyed chatting with our wine tasting neighbor who just so happens to come every Wednesday.

The 2009 Rock and a Hard Place paired with the pozole stew was my favorite.

Back to the wine… they were delightful!

Jan, the sommelier brought a fun element to the night and I was amazed by the end of the 90 minute tasting, she knew everyone’s name like they were old friends.

What surprised me most was how incredible the food pairings were with the wine. I never have high expectations for food at a bar but that wasn’t the case. At only $30 a person, you get a substantial amount of good wine and tasty food.

The Barrel 27 wines and food pairings we had this past Wednesday were great: a White Rhone Blend with Classic Shrimp Ceviche, a Red Wine Blend with a Chorizo Quesadilla, a Grenache with Pork Pozole Soup and a Syrah with a Chicken Enchilada.

Overall, it was an enjoyable evening that I can’t wait to repeat.

Wednesday Wine Tastings
Every Wednesday; Various Themes
Reservations Recommended.
Typically 4-5 Wine and Food Pairings at $25-$30 person.
6 p.m. and 8 p.m.

An American Legacy: Norell, Blass, Halston & Sprouse Now Open

Bill Blass collection at the Indianapolis Museum of Art

The latest exhibition at the Indianapolis Museum of Art, An American Legacy, Norell, Blass, Halston, & Sprouse opened last week and I was fortunate enough to take a sneak peak tour of the exhibit during the Fashion Arts Society inaugural hat luncheon and let me assure you – An American Legacy is not to be missed.

Highlighting the work of four celebrated fashion designers: Normal Norell, Bill Blass, Stephen Sprouse and Halston, the exhibit is more than an opportunity to view iconic fashions – it is a chance to celebrate the life and work of these accomplished Hoosiers.

Blass, Evening Dress, 1981

The creations featured in the exhibition span from the 1940s to the early 21st century, many of which are instantly recognizable, like this evening dress worn by Nancy Reagan on the occasion of a state dinner for Japan’s Prime Minister Zenko Suzuki and wife, Sachi Suzuki, May 7, 1981.

Halston, Evening Dress, 1972

As well as reflecting the designer’s individual styles, visitors to the exhibit will also notice the influence their designs had on both the fashion and pop culture worlds. A 1972 evening dress designed by Halston based on Andy Warhol’s ‘flowers’ paintings is a perfect example.

The exhibition runs from May 4, 2012 – January 27, 2013 in the Gerald and Dorit Paul Galleries at the IMA.
