Wine Lovers Have Many Options In Indy

What did the grape say when the elephant stood on it?

Nothing, it just let out a little wine.

If you’re a wine lover visiting Indianapolis with your partner, you have a number of great options that not only offer good wines, but also a fun and educational experience to take in together. A winery is a great place to visit, as tasting rooms allow you to figure out your preferences without have to buy an entire bottle first. In Indy, I suggest a number of stops to feed your inner wino.

In a past blog, I wrote about New Day Meadery. While it’s not a traditional winery, its honey-based nectar is equally good and a nice change of pace. As former beekeepers, the owners are super knowledgeable about their craft and they love to share their story with visitors. Before you buy a bottle, you’ll have the chance to try each of their varieties.

Also downtown is Easley Winery. Established in 1974, it’s the oldest family-owned winery in the state of Indiana. It offers up to 25 different wines and a very informative tour that explains the wine-making process. I suggest the champagne, which is sweet, bubbly and crisp. I even used it when I proposed to my wife. And she said yes, so it must be good (or strong).

If you come into town on 70 East, you’ll spot Cheateau Thomas just off the highway near Indianapolis International Airport. The 2,000-plus square foot tasting room is more than ample to get your wine on, and it also offers tours of its wine-making area for groups of 10 or more, if you book in advance.

If you’re more interested in an evening activity, stop by Tastings at the Conrad Indianapolis. It’s not a winery, but this unique wine bar allows you to try bunch of different wines without breaking the bank. Simply prepay an amount of your choosing and get a plastic card you can swipe at stations with different wine selections. The station pours you a small taste of vino and deducts the specified amount off your card.

I also suggest you check out the events held by the Indy Wine Trail. It’s a great way to get to know the city and our wine landscape.

So grab your significant other and come taste what we have to offer in the way of wine.
