FREE Family Tours at the IMA

IMA Benin Art

We live in Indianapolis. We love it. And yet from time to time, my wandering soul longs to see a bit more of the world. More than anything I’d love for Princess Youngest {4} and Princess Eldest {10} to see world cultures in action – to experience foods, music, dance, and art from around the world. But let’s face it, for most of us, jet setting at the drop of the hat isn’t feasible for our finances or time. And traveling with a 4 year old around the world?! I’m just not that brave.

So what a blessing it is to have an opportunity to “drop” into art from another continent in the space of 30 minutes and at the cost of nothing. The second and fourth Saturdays of every month, the Indianapolis Museum of Art offers FREE Family Tours. And this Saturday February 23rd, you and your family can magically be transported from the midwest to the continent of Africa through the Out of Africa tour. You’ll even transcend time as you look at ancient, traditional, and contemporary art from Africa.

So gather your world travelers {no suitcases required} and meet on Floor 2 {to the right of the Welcome Desk}. After you recoup from your journey, head to the Make-and-Take Family Activity in the Star Studio Classroom. Weekly, from Noon to 4 pm on Saturday you can create your own masterpiece! This month, construct an abstract drawing using cardboard cut-outs and charcoal sticks in celebration of the special exhibition, GraphiteHave a budding artist who can’t help but touch? Check out the IMA’s special Hold It! family experience. Instead of saying, “DON’T touch that!!” you can encourage curiosity. This month African and Asian objects as well as art fundamentals are on display. Check out the Welcome Desk on Floor 2 to discover out where Saturday’s Hold It! Family Activity is located. All things hands on from your art aficionado which is of course the best way to learn.

Travel around the world at a world class museum right in Indianapolis. Have you every embarked on a Family Experience or Tour at the IMA?
